Reviews of Gram's Gift

As a published author and journalist, I very highly recommend Joyce Mosley's wonderful book, Gram's Gift, that's exceptionally informative and intriguing   as it explores her unparalleled family lines in America that stretches to the   colonial period and beyond. She has very skillfully probed the lives of her   historic African-American ancestors, some with indigenous-American roots,   including the previously enslaved Cyrus Bustill who baked bread for George   Washington's Revolutionary War army. Her Morrey and Montier ancestors even   have interracial ties to Philadelphia's first mayor, a Quaker named Humphrey   Morrey, whose son Richard had a relationship with a formerly enslaved woman,   Cremona. By way of stories passed down to Mosley via her beloved "Gram"   and other relatives, she has expertly documented several family lines ranging   from the Bustills and Millers to the Montiers and Robesons, including the   iconic African American activist, scholar, entertainer and athlete, Paul   Robeson. Other highly-esteemed extended family members include some of   America's most notable trailblazing African Americans, such as the Mossells,   Bowsers, Tanners and others. Although youngsters will find reading about her   very rich family history absorbing and profound, adults will too as Mosley   uniquely examines her ancestors interacting with celebrated historical   figures while participating in events ranging from the Revolutionary War, the   Civil War (and Underground Railroad) and so much more!

I loved the detailed history. In researching her family history, she uncovered love that transcended culture race, and class. The Miller family/Bustill family is rich with tradition and filled with love.
